Yes,Thailand  is  a  kingdom  with  the  king  being  the  symbolic  ruler ,  the  legislative  power  through  the  courts  of  law ,  in  the  limited  monarchical  regime  of  democracy.  Every  constitution  says  that  He  is  the  symbol  of  respect  beyond  any  trespass.  Any  one  committing  harmful  action  against  Him  is  punishable  with  exceptionally  grave  penalty , death  in  most  cases.  A  real  example  was  in  the  case  of  assassination  of  King  Rama  VIII  who  was  shot  and  killed  in  1946.  Three  men  in  the  King’s  court  were  arrested  and  prosecuted  for  knowing  of  the  event  but  did  not  notify  it  to  the  authority  in  due  time.  All  were  punished  with  capital  punishment –executed  ( shot  to  death ).  The  Queen , the  Crown  Prince  and  The  Regent  are  traditionally  and  legally  protected  in  a  similar  way.  So  a  foreign  visitor  must  be  very  careful  with  his  or  her  acts  and  words  relating  to  our  King  and  the  said  dignitaries.  If  you  are  escorted  to  have  an  audience  with  any  of  them ,  you  have  to  act  in  a  very  humble  manner.  You  never  sit  crossed  lags  or  in  the  same  level  with  any  of  them.  Usually  people  kneel  in  the  audience.  At  a  certain  time  last  year ,  a  princess  went  privately  in  an  underground  train,  putting  on  a  cap  to  cover  her  face.  However  other  passengers  there  saw  her  and  recognized  her.  They  all  got   up  from  their  seats  and  sat  down  on  the  floor  paying  their  due  respect  to  her  royal  highness  until  she  left.  Usually  a  visitor  doesn’t  shake  hands  with  them  unless  they  They  stretch  out  their  hands  to  you  in  courtesy.  In  such  a  case ,  you  may  touch  the  hand  with  your  head  bowing  in  respect.
